    Job Description

    DLZ has a rewarding opportunity for a Director of Architect / Principal Architect in our Columbus, Ohio office.



    • Organize the efforts of the Ohio Architecture and Building engineering staff and workload.
    • Review all functions and activities of the A-E Departments and recommends such actions that are necessary to achieve improvement in design and production and/or cost reduction.
    • Work with the President in developing long and short range plans for the advancement and growth of the department.
    • Maintain continuous communications with Department Managers, Business Development staff, and all DLZ’s offices to ensure company capabilities are fully utilized.
    • Oversees A-E efforts and provides guidance as necessary to ensure quality, schedule, and budget of all projects.
    • Review quality, accuracy, and completeness of projects in accordance with building code compliance, architectural standards and MEP/SE/CE coordination.
    • Work with Department Managers and Project Managers to prepare quarterly projections, invoicing and closeout for the department.
    • Monitor contractual commitments and confirm work is being performed according to the client's instructions.
    • Prepare and monitor Division’s operating budget.
    • Direct the activities of all personnel reporting to him/her or assigned on specific projects.
    • Provide design guidance, mentor-ship and leadership at all stages of projects and maintain architectural design and production standards and procedures.
    • Review staff and is responsible for morale of the department.
    • Coordinate established performance standards and evaluate work against these standards.
    • Plan, manage, coordinate and administer all work assigned to the department.
    • Advise staff on professional development, and recommend ways for them to advance.
    • Recommend personnel and funds required to carry out the programs that are directly related with and directed toward fulfillment of overall division objectives.
    • Performs Business Development within the firm's business development program specifically related to A-E projects.
    • Works with Business Development staff and prepares responses for Request for Qualifications and Request for Proposals with A-E staff
    • Initiate and maintain contacts with key professionals and officials of other organizations and companies.
    • Make client contact and maintain working relationships at all levels.
    • Becomes a member of and work to be actively involved in civic and professional activities, societies and organizations.
    • Verify that all health & safety concerns are addressed.
    • Ensure Quality Management procedures are executed on all projects.


    • Bachelor or Masters of Architecture Degree
    • Registered Architect in the state of Ohio
    • 15 or more years relevant work experience, managerial experience preferred.
    • Judicial, Municipal, Educational, and/or Federal Project experience
    • Strong technical writing and oral presentation skills
    • Experience in a variety of project types, scale and complexity; following project from conception through completion.
    • Experience working on concurrent projects, collaborating with multiple design disciplines, and technical production project experience.
    • Proficient with software programs inherent to successful completion of the work.
    • Ability to visit and safely traverse construction and project sites, complying with all applicable safety codes and requirements.
